Nunes Caught on Secret Tape Supporting Impeachment of Rosenstein and that Stealing Emails is a Crime

Congressman Devin Nunes was caught on a secret recording during a private fundraiser for Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers stating that he supports the impeachment of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and that he considers stealing an opponent’s emails a crime.

“Because somebody stole the emails, gave ‘em to Cathy, Cathy released ‘em. Well, if that’s the case, then that’s criminal.”

Nunes’ statement that stealing an opponents’ emails is a crime is in direct conflict with the Trump administration.

In regards to Rosenstein, Nunes said, “I’ve said publicly Rosenstein deserves to be impeached. I mean, so, I don’t think you’re gonna get any argument from most of our colleagues.”

According to Fox News, House Speaker Paul Ryan publicly opposed the conservative-led bid to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, saying their accusations don’t rise to the necessary level of “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

“I don’t think we should be cavalier with this process,” said Ryan.

Nunes also emphasized the importance of the Republicans’ holding on to Congress in November in order to protect President Trump.

“If Sessions won’t unrecuse and Mueller won’t clear the president, we’re the only ones…we have to keep all these seats,” he continued. “We have to keep the majority. If we do not keep the majority, all of this goes away.”

Nunes, who has been criticized for not being accessible to his own constituents, made himself available to the constituents of Washington State’s Congressional District 5 July 30 during a private fundraiser for Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers.

McMorris Rodgers, who represents a solid Republican district, endured a tough primary Tuesday night, barely squeaking out a first place finish by less than one point against her Democrat opponent.

Nunes was in McMorris Rodgers’ district last Monday night campaigning and fundraising for the embattled Republican.

The following are excerpts from a recording made by a member of the progressive group Fuse Washington. The member paid to attend the fundraiser and provided the audio to MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show.

Clip #1:

REP. NUNES (R-CA): “So therein lies, so it’s like your classic Catch-22 situation where we were at a – this puts us in such a tough spot. If Sessions won’t unrecuse and Mueller won’t clear the president, we’re the only ones. Which is really the danger. That’s why I keep, and thank you for saying it by the way, I mean we have to keep all these seats. We have to keep the majority. If we do not keep the majority, all of this goes away.”

 Clip #2:

REP. NUNES (R-CA): “They know it’s ridiculous to go after the president for obstruction of justice. But if they tell a lie often enough and they put it out there and they say, ‘Oh, we’re looking at the tweets,’ cause you know you’ve got a mixed bag on the tweets, right? Like sometimes you love the president’s tweets, sometimes we cringe on the president’s tweets. But they’re trying to make a political, this is all political as to why that story ran in the New York Times on the tweets.”

Clip #3:

REP. NUNES (R-CA): “Now if somebody thinks that my campaign or Cathy’s campaign is colluding with the Chinese, or you name the country, hey, could happen, it would be a very bad thing if Cathy was getting secrets from the Portuguese, let’s say, just because I’m Portuguese, my family was. So Cathy was getting secret information from the Portuguese. You know, may or may not be unusual. But ultimately let’s say the Portuguese came and brought her some stolen emails. And she decided to release those. Okay, now we have a problem, right? Because somebody stole the emails, gave ‘em to Cathy, Cathy released ‘em. Well, if that’s the case, then that’s criminal.”

Clip #4:

AUDIENCE MEMBER: “But also, on things that came up in the House on Rosenstein impeachment thing. And it appears from an outsider that the Republicans were not supported.”

REP. NUNES (R-CA): “Yeah, well, so it’s a bit complicated, right? And I say that because you have to, so we only have so many months left, right? So if we actually vote to impeach, okay, what that does is that triggers the Senate then has to take it up. Well, and you have to decide what you want right now because the Senate only has so much time. Do you want them to drop everything and not confirm the Supreme Court justice, the new Supreme Court justice? So that’s part of why, I don’t think you have, you’re not getting from, and I’ve said publicly Rosenstein deserves to be impeached. I mean, so, I don’t think you’re gonna get any argument from most of our colleagues. The question is the timing of it right before the election.”

REP. MCMORRIS RODGERS (R-WA): “Also, the Senate has to start –”

REP. NUNES (R-CA): “The Senate would have to start, the Senate would have to drop everything they’re doing and start to, and start with impeachment on Rosenstein. And then take the risk of not getting Kavanaugh confirmed. So it’s not a matter that any of us like Rosenstein. It’s a matter of, it’s a matter of timing.”

  1. Well, no wonder Nunes can’t find the time to meet with his constituents. He is too busy fluffing Trump.

  2. What is interesting is that he is lying to Republicans in a private meeting. The Senate could move on an impeachment of Rosenstein but Reprblican politicians know there would be a firestorm of protest. It’s clear that lying is standard practice with Nunes. He learned well from his master.

  3. Mr. Nunes is a strategic thinker. He believes that his future is best served if he aligns himself with Donald Trump. He is now “all Trump all the time”, so he doesn’t have any time to hold town hall meetings with voters from this District, especially non-Republican voters, or to otherwise communicate with local voters. Have you noticed that most of his campaign dollars come from outside this District?

As a member of the House of Representatives, he is fully aware that the House makes all decisions on a simple majority system. As long as the Republicans have 50% of the membership plus one, Nunes has influence on legislation. BUT, if Democrats gain the majority in the House, which seems very possible as of this day, Devin Nunes will have no legislative influence at all. He has gone out of his way to offend many of his fellow legislators (and all Democrats) as well as many of his constituents and they will all remember his conduct. And, Devin’s conduct will not serve the needs of Tulare County or this congressional voting district in the event of such a change.

Many people think of Republicans as having better values than their political opponents, in spite of the conduct displayed by Mr. Trump and his cabinet level appointees (or the parade of Republican congress members resigning to spend more time with their families). It may be time to reconsider that “better values” judgment, and decide to vote for those things that are in your own best interest. Those things include having a voice in the House from someone who listens to their constituents (both those who support and oppose their politics) and who works to further the interests of this part of California.

Devin wants a job in the White House and not in the House of Representatives.

  4. Nunes was handpicked by local rich farmers and their cartels to be their very own personal lobbyist in Washington and over the years he has been taking PAC money from extremist groups. Nunes has become a corrupted politician in Washington who loves the lifestyle of the rich and famous. Nunes does not respect the oath that he took as a Congressman to serve in the House of Representatives. Nunes does not respect the citizens that he took an oath to serve in the House of Representatives. Nunes does not protect and serve Tulare County constituents. Nunes does not even try to protect his country from tyranny both foreign and domestic. Nunes lies and manipulates just to protect Trump and only Trump. Nunes suffers from afluenza and Trumpism. Nunes needs to be voted out of office. VOTE FOR JANZ

  5. Sorrty, we have far too many scum sucking tax taking Democrats. Janz is nothing more than a bureaucrat who has topped out on his present salary! He offers nothing! Screw him!

  6. https://ballotpedia.org/Andrew_Janz

READ! Then take a few days to process the information you have read and THINK! Go ask Mr. Janz yourself on why you should vote for him. Make the time to get to know Mr. Janz. You just might find out that you really don’t have a real reason to hate the man other than he is running against Nunes.

    • Dave M, people who tend to comment everytime they get a opportunity with “VOTE JANZ” will never answer questions or be open to a discussion. It requires critically thinking. Easier to regurgitate the media bias spew. Probably was influenced by a “Vote for Janz” freeway sign, a flyer, or the SEIU. Maybe they are on Janz Payroll trolling as our media likes to call it.

      Just watch:

Saul and Barbara, are you two on the Janz Campaign payroll, because you sure do not miss any opportunity to comment and pile on all the Anti-Nunes and Anti-Trump themed articles? I am beginning to wonder if you source your news from anything other than the ones that serve your agenda. Get outside of your bubble and think for yourself. Please ask yourself what happened to objective journalism. At one time, recording someone without consent was not admissible nor could it be published under ethical journalism, and it also can be against the law. Was it not Democrats crying foul over “my civil liberties are being violated” a couple years ago for something similiar? Interesting how it fits your narrative now, so just disregard the marches a couple years ago! Answer this; has anyone seen one article questioning where Costas representation went or his spending habits? Interesting how he gets a free pass for his do nothing representation. Interesting how not one article was reported about Ms Hengs ad being sensored by media. While you parade around for Janz, Costa very well could lose his seat to Ms Heng. Whom will be refreshing in congress.

Barbara, I took exception with your comment, “local rich farmers and their cartel handpicked Nunes as their personal lobbyist,” because it could not be further from the truth. Please provide your source? More importantly, please quit with the broad brush propoganda statements to support your narrative. Those of us in agriculture are not all rich. My farm income was once enough to support a frugal lifestyle, now it barely covers college tuition for my child. Far cry from the “big ag” theme that your side interjects to fit the anti ag articles. Just shows how ignorant the “big ag” statement is. Do some research on the average farm size in Califronia. Ask yourself why would farmers and their so called cartels focus on one vote at the national level, when this state alone has destroyed families, and continues to destroy multi-generational farms with legislation and policies. Also please respond to John’s comment which is contradicting to yours in that most of Nunes money is now funneled from outside the district, not ag as you state, but you still babble on about local rich farmers. Appears you two need a training update on commenting policies under Janz Campaign SOPs.

As for Saul, he qouted, in one of many “NO NUNES..VOTE JANZ” comments, an Arax opinion articles to support his narrative. That is equivalent to the right quoting Hannity to support theirs. Draw your own opinions.

For the purpose of moving forward Barbara, I will lower myself in a attempt to play “stereotyping.” I will rebut your comment with my own broad brush. Nunes is from Tulare. His family farms and dairies which many, unlike you, in the district still believe to be a noble profession, plus they feed you. Leave this area, example-your beloved crap hole SF, and we are made fun of. Those of you in Tulare are also known for being clicky (end of stereotyping should you need to know), coupled with his background resonated with constituents. He also has done a lot for this area since being elected. Not too many people from this area become chair of the intelligence committee. That is what got him elected and still makes him popular in the Tulare and Visalia areas. He is also teaming up with local and state elected across party lines to put an end to the illegal gax tax, Prop 6 if you have not heard. As someone who grew up in Tulare; the name calling, persecution, and all the negativity of the comments, plus the media biases of Trump and Nunes is tired and old. The sole focus on all the alleged wrongs, and I repeat alleged, with absolutely no regard for any of the good from either man, is saddening. It is a true reflection of the lows the media has to go to in order to get readership of said papers, a diluted internet new sources, and viewership for TV ratings. It is also fascinating that all the focus is on one president and 1 of 435 congress members. Get over the Hilary loss, and please do not make me provide accolades of the Hilary I witnessed while she was in goverment positions (See Barbaras comment to Ed in Valley Voice should you not understand). Correct me If I am wrong, are there not some big issues facing Tulare. Are these not the local issues which our forefathers desired most power to resonate? A hospital those of us Tulare property owners are financing through taxation, which last check, is still closed. Two city counsel members; Carlton who does not afford the effort in commenting on, Nunley-(read Valley Voice articles), a projected million dollar plus city deficit, water, a gas tax, roads and infastructures, homeless, fires and influences on air quality, and not an issue, but deserves a noted comment, a good fill-in Mayor asking for prayers for the city. Definitely a head scratcher…but I forgot that narrative does not fit the “for hire” narrative (VOTE FOR JANZ) and viewing things objectively does it? My decision appears to be getting easier in November. I look forward to Ms. Heng representing District 16. I am sure Janz is a good person, but Saul, Barbara, and biased media influenced my vote. I look forward to another Nunes term. The media and comments truly shows a side I do not want to be associated with. You should watch the Heng ad link below…..how refreshing, what a beautiful story, and all unsensored! I should just move to District 16 because I am so rich, right Barbara? Unfortunately, my rich does not get me much more than the PRIDE in feeding people.
Instead of all your focus on Nunes and “Trumplicans,” as you like to call them, try focusing on local issues and helping the homeless in Tulare or something. Don’t like my stereotyping game, then stop doing it!

      • Dave M, see the intentional shun of direct questions. That is because no talking point exist to address direct specific questions or concerns. See the avoidance to discuss local issues. That is due to others comments are unavailable to plagiarize (copy and paste) from other news sources. I could care less that there is the desire to vote for Janz. May the best candidate win. That is the beauty of voting and power of the people. But when one cannot address direct questions, plagiarizes other views, attacks my livelihood, and turns a blind eye to local issues it is very concerning. Barbara, let me know in November if you need assistance filling in those lined arrows with your pen. Remember it is not a coloring book at the end of the day. You are V-O-T-I-N-G. Keep up the great work, you are making someone very proud.

        • No thanks! I do not listen to people who uses initials to identify themselves. For all I know you could be a Russian Troll….a Trumplican! lol 🙂 Oh yeah….don’t forget to VOTE FOR JANZ!

  9. It would be interesting to see where each commenter actually lives. Since moving to Tulare 9 years ago, I was struck by how liberal the City of Visalia government is. Somewhat surprising considering their location in a very conservative area of the state. I am an unashamed Nunes fan. It was not always so. I have been impressed with his diligence in following the Constitution in his efforts to root out the corruption in the FBI and DOJ. I won’t go into the actual facts of that corruption, since it is easily available to all who care to look. The liberal left, don’t want to know and will never search for the truth. I have said this numerous times but it bears repeating. Devin Nunes has to be the cleanest guy in DC. Otherwise the Fake news weasels would have taken him out months ago. History will bear me out on this. As far as you guys constant squawking about his refusal to hold downhill style meetings. Who blames him. You know that you all see it as an opportunity to shout him down, asked loaded questions and just be general donkey bee hinds. He’s outsmarted you on this and it is driving you crazy. Kudos to Nunes for figuring you out.

  10. I have been accused of having an agenda, a charge to which I plead – “guilty”. I think Devin Nunes is an awful Congressional Representative, and I think the voters should defeat him in the upcoming election. The way to defeat Nunes this November is to vote for his opponent Andrew Janz.
I think he is awful for a number of reasons. 1) Nunes is not open and available to his constituents. This is of course the main reason to have a Representative. Nunes’ ducking of this essential responsibility has been well documented elsewhere. 2) Nunes wastes his opportunity to represent his constituents with clownish conspiracy theories like his current “deep state” idiocy and his “environmentalists are communists” stupidity detailed here: https://www.sacbee.com/opinion/california-forum/article215786705.html 3) Nunes sabotage of legitimate congressional inquiry into the Russian influence in our elections. His House committee could find “no evidence” of Russian election sabotage despite the intel agencies and members of the Trump Administration like Wray, Sanders, Coats, and Nielsen confirming Russian attacks on American elections.
I will stop with those 3 reasons. If you want to return the Representative who fails repeatedly to Congress then no amount of reasons will change your mind. I write to those who are still deciding.

  11. As nearly as I can tell, the poster who included a link to the Mike Dunbar opinion does so to make the point that surface water is a state/local issue. It largely is, but the federal government always has a role because federal money financed the CVP back in the days of the Great Depression. The reason I bring it up in the context of awful Representative Nunes is that he demagogues the issue instead of getting anything done on the issue. The previously referenced Arax opinion details some of his clownishness, as does this news report from Gene Haagenson: https://abc30.com/archive/7020050/
I do like the reference to Mike Dunbar’s writing. I admire his forceful and dogged defense and advocacy of local interests when it comes to water. I do not always agree with his positions, but I like his writing.

  12. A prior poster brought up local Tulare issues as some kind of apparent deflection from awful Representative Nunes. There are indeed some things to be unhappy about in Tulare. The governance of the hospital seems like a particularly sad story. But these are indeed local stories and do not bear on my “agenda” which is to defeat awful Representative Devin Nunes. And I have seen the primary results – Nunes got more than half of the votes, and he is likely to be re-elected. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t advocate for his defeat. I have made my case, and will continue to do so. Get rid of a bad politician – Devin Nunes. Vote for Andrew Janz.

  13. Really whoop de do so he wants Rosenstein impeached … so would I . I think Devin has been a great congressman especially to put up with you fake constituents who bombard Tulare looking for dirt, I have never in my life seen such obvious fakes in my life …. how much do they pay you to protest with your professional signs . Luckily most informed voters see right through you. Thanks valley voice for showing both sides……not,

    • Lucky for Nunes the majority of voters in his district do not bother to vote, thus insuring his re-election.
