Gleaning Seniors to hold large yard sale

Don’t miss the Gleaning Seniors fall yard sale happening Thursday, Friday, Saturday, September 9, 10, 11, 2021. The hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 12 Noon and the sale is located at 28600 Rd 156 between Walnut and Caldwell.

The purpose and objective of the “Gleaners” is to help overcome economic hardship for our senior citizen members by providing meats, fruits, vegetables, breads and sweets.

In 1976 the GLEANING SENIORS began with a small group of seven people.  Seeing the need for food by a number of senior, low-income people, and then seeing the waste that took place in this fertile valley, these seven set about to glean food that would have been thrown away.  They talked with growers, and, with permission, picked fruit and vegetables and loaded their cars.  They delivered this to those in need.  A “grass roots” group, these first members called themselves ‘GLEANERS.’  This was taken from the Biblical language, meaning those who were sent into the fields and gathered the fallen grain from the harvest.

Because of shipping restrictions, price considerations, or just cosmetic reasons, the produce and food donations are now donated to the Visalia Gleaning Seniors by farmers, farmer-organizations, and local supermarkets.

Today this organization serves 250+ senior households.  The seniors pay a yearly membership of $60 and participate monthly in a variety of volunteer hours.  Aside from the value of the produce, each Gleaner also receives the intangible values of fellowship and friendship.  These are priceless values.

The Visalia Gleaning Seniors is a 501-c-3 non-profit organization.   It is non-discriminatory with respect to race, creed, color, belief, national origin, sex, handicap, or political affiliation.

The Gleaners accepts members who are 45+ years and live in the Visalia Unified School District.
