Shame on Amy Shuklian and Visalia City Council for being afraid to offer an actual Pride Month Proclamation, in public.

This BS and Behavior from Townsend has been going on since at least 2008, an Shuklian held hersell and Visalia Council up as better than Porterville in 2013 during the Pride Proclamation fiasco that Townsend was front and center in leading protests against.

Now it’s almost 20 years since I first spoke up in Porterville and elsewhere and not a damn thing has changed, including Shuklian’s unwillingness to say that it’s high time Pride Month be recognized in Tulare County.

In October, The Source will be holding a Pride event in Visalia. That will be the perfect time for both BoS and Visalia Council to step into the 21st Century and issue a straightforward general Pride Month Proclamation the way that cities all over California and across America do routinely. We’ll be watching.

PFLAG originally stood for parents, families and friends of lesbians and gays, but it is no longer an acronym as we are more inclusive than that and include bisexual, asexual, transgender, nonbinary and more in the people that we uplift.

By walking out the supervisors provoked a conflict rather than avoiding one.

The barely visible sign that Supervisor Vander Poel found so partisan was one that had not even registered with PFLAG leaders, and when I learned of it I immediately edited the photo so that the words on the sign are no longer visible on the website. We are a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) and do not endorse or recommend against any candidates. We do advocate on issues, legislation, propositions and behaviors that affect the community we support. When LGBTQ+ people are treated well then everyone does better.

It was insulting and disappointing to have Townsend and Vander Poel decline to sign the proclamation, then sneak out of the chambers during the presentation. I don’t for a minute buy the notion that it was in any way “respectful”, and Vander Poel’s comments that “Activism and protesting are not strategies I believe in…” are strange, to say the least. He does know what country he’s a political leader in, doesn’t he?
I commend Supervisors Micari, Valero, and Shuklian for doing the right thing. They display leadership and the understanding of the value in recognizing organizations that help thousands of people each year in Tulare County.
Three out of five.
I suppose it could have been worse. I mean, after all, look at Porterville’s City Council. They’re only managing one out of five.
