I personally have nothing bad to say about the VPD, any interactions I’ve had with them, have been fair, however law enforcement departments across the country are corrupt and they need to be scrutinized regularly to insure the corruption doesn’t take over.

Yellow Mustard is good on buns and bread, not so good using it to hide a commenter's identity. Or maybe you just couldn't remember how to spell your name correctly???? :)

They need to hire a new chief. A capt was charged with stealing from the police activities league and she was put on paid leave for like 6mths that's alot of money if the city paid her. Money that Visalia doesn't have to waste. And now an officer is alleging this?

Excellent work, David! I'm so proud of you! I’ve always supported our law enforcement officers and I still do — they have one of the toughest jobs in our community, and they deserve our respect and gratitude. But support doesn’t mean silence when it comes to transparency. When VPD chose to fully encrypt routine radio traffic, I said at the time that it would erode public trust. Not because I believe they’re doing something wrong, but because the public loses a simple, long-standing way to understand and see the work officers do every day.

Now, with the recent controversy, I believe that decision is coming back to haunt them. Encryption might protect sensitive information, but when everything is hidden, the community starts to wonder what else they’re not being told. Open communication builds confidence; secrecy breeds suspicion. I want VPD to succeed, and part of that success comes from letting the people they serve hear the reality of their daily work — not just the headlines after the fact. Transparency protects good officers as much as it informs the public.

Would it be acceptable, to the public who pay taxes that pay for these motorcycle officers, if these motorcycle officers wrote 20 or 15 or 10 or 0 tickets in a month? Or would the same tax payer be upset they were paying for motorcycle officers to do little to no work? What is an acceptable amount?

Dave Adalian: You need to grow some thicker skin to make it in the journalism business, kid! Attacking your readership is ALWAYS a bad move, my friend. Plus, I agree that putting out a news article that has not been proofread is sloppy. Good article, and reads well otherwise, though.

Was it a policy(it’s not you and the public can get a copy of our policy), or was it a supervisor’s expectations of his subordinates?

You’re misunderstanding the core issue. This isn’t about whether a motor officer should write tickets - that’s part of the job. The problem is the allegation of an illegal quota requiring a set number of tickets per stop. California law prohibits ticket quotas, whether for motors or patrol, because they incentivize revenue generation over fair enforcement. If the lawsuit is accurate, this isn’t ‘just doing your job’ - it’s following a policy that undermines public trust and violates state law.
