There are plenty of rapist, murderers, child molesters being released way too early! Keep those SOB's in prison for ever! They don't need to see the light of day! folks who are in prison for petty crimes is evidence that we are in a reality where the "system" of persecutors, judges, probation departments and many police forces are not really there to protect the public.. but rather to line their own pockets with a government wage the excellent benefits they get from being a "so called" public servant. Beat cops end up taking the brunt of the "unintended consequences" that come along with these policies, and they are the least of the problem.. it's their superiors who send them out to the streets and all those who sit behind a desks that are the real problem.

While there are some violent criminals in Prison, there any many many more that are simply there because of probation violations for possession drugs, petty theft (all caused by mental illness/drug addition) and we are giving out excessive punishment for non-violent crimes! The so called "war on Drugs" needs to be fought at our borders, not in our neighborhoods and by sending people to prison! If anything the war on drugs is a war on marijuana, which should be legal, if they stopped the marijuana raids all over CA we would have much more money to invest in more projects like the ones mentioned in this article.

California was ordered by federal judges to lessen prison overcrowding after complaints about the conditions of prisons and overcrowding. The approach above is the correct approach. Build supermax prisons for the worst of the worst, and convert prisons to rehab centers.. it's the only way!
