MacDonald: “I would not hesitate for myself or my family to have surgery at Tulare’s hospital”

This letter is to notify Visalia Times-Delta/Tulare Advance-Register that I deny the statement in the ‘teaser’ video (posted online on June 15, 2017) regarding a CDPH report, because it was taken out of context and inaccurately portrayed. Specifically, the inaccurately displayed and pulled out of context statement reads, “The Operating Room Director had stated for more than two years he had concerns for patient safety.”

In 2014, I was brought in by HCCA to make significant improvements in the surgical processes at Tulare Regional Medical Center. Since that time, I have been working with the surgical and clinical department making substantial improvements. These improvements include the implementation of major policy changes dealing with the quality improvement process. Due to the quality improvement process, we have added additional staffing to include a surgical physician assistant, new surgeons, additional anesthesia providers, and an additional surgical coverage crew. We have extensively renovated and improved the processes in the Sterile Processing Unit, . which includes new state-of-the-art sterile processing equipment and instrumentation. In the operating room we have done a full renovation, including new operating room tables, hi-tech endoscopy equipment, and a new orthopedic fracture table. We performed a full-scale $100,000 renovation of the Ambulatory Surgery Unit. Additionally, I have implemented nationally recognized and certified training of our surgical nursing staff.

CDPH officials notified me that they were very impressed with all the changes that have been made in here at Tulare Regional Medical Center in such a short period of time. I have thirty-five years of nursing experience in all areas of surgical services. I have complete confidence in my team and I am proud to be a part of the progressive organization that is Tulare Regional Medical Center. I would not hesitate for myself or my family to have surgery at Tulare’s hospital.
